Web Edutainment Links
In working at a school I soon found that kids educational software gets
expensive. So, I started collecting links to sites on the web where kids can
play good educational games online. All you need is a good Internet connection
and a browser equipped with Flash and Shockwave (both free) and you're on your
way. Here are some of the best I've found.
-
GameGoo
-
GameGoo makes phonics software that focuses on having students listen to words
and then determine the letters that make up the words. The games here are
great, and the kids really enjoy them.
-
Noggin.com
-
Website for the commercial free cable channel "Noggin" developed by the Nick Jr. folks. The site has some good games based on charactes for shows like Blues Clues, Franklin and Sesame Street
-
PBS Kids
-
This is the parent website for PBS educational TV shows. The site links to each
show's area, and some of the areas have incredible games to play. One of the
best is CyberQuest, which has a fantastic collection of math and reasoning
games.
-
PuzzleMaker
-
For teachers. Create printable puzzles (seek and find, crosswords puzzles, cryptograms, etc.)
online. Nice tool.
-
RiverDeep
-
RiverDeep makes a lot of educational software. Their site includes some
excellent programs to download, as well as a good mix of games to play online.
Some of the games are better for students who are a bit older (3rd grade or so).
-
Prongo
-
Prongo has a good mix of games, some of which are educational. They also have a
lot of annoying pop-up ads for stuff, so they aren't my favorite site, but they
are worth checking out.
-
Up To Ten
-
Site has some really good games for younger kids. The graphics and interaction
is great.
-
BBC Games
-
A large collection of games relating to British TV shows you've probably never
seen. Kind of the British version of PBS Kids. Some nice stuff. They also have a section for Young Kids and a School section.
